1. Problem Context
Rear-seat passengers often open doors without awareness of approaching vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians — leading to “dooring” accidents.
This is a visibility + system feedback problem, not just user error.
2. Design Goal
Prevent unsafe door opening by introducing a real-time awareness + intervention system at the moment of exit.

3. Experience Overview (User Journey)
Flow:
Passenger reaches door handle
System scans surroundings
Risk detected → block + alert
Safe → allow door to open
4. Interaction Flow (Core Logic)
Passenger pulls door handle
↓
Sensor scan (side + rear proximity)
↓
Is object approaching?
/ \
YES NO
↓ ↓
Lock door Unlock door Alert user Open normally

State 2 — Risk Detected
Door temporarily locked
Red LED indicator
Voice alert:
“Vehicle approaching, please wait”

State 3 — Waiting / Transitional
Red blinking light
Subtle ticking sound
Indicates system is monitoring
6. Interface Touchpoints
Where the system appears:
Door handle (primary interaction point)
Side indicator / mirror light strip
Optional dashboard notification
Audio system (voice alerts)
Components:
Proximity sensors (radar / ultrasonic)
Object detection logic
Door lock control system
Audio + visual feedback layer

8. Design Principles
Preventive > Reactive
Minimal friction (only block when needed)
Clear feedback (no ambiguity)
Fail-safe (manual override always possible)
9. Edge Cases Considered
Emergency exit → override unlock
Slow-moving objects → allow with warning
False detection → avoid over-blocking
Night visibility → stronger light cues
10. Outcome (Concept Value)
A system that transforms a simple action (opening a door) into a context-aware safety interaction, reducing accidents and improving passenger awareness.
